A top sportswoman who became a top police officer has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday Honours. 

A 1980s Silver Fern, Inspector Karen Henrikson is now the operations support manager for the Waikato District. It's a role with no small amount of responsibility, including overseeing the police district's search-and-rescue and dog section units.

A policewoman for more than 30 years - and, in 2008, the first woman to be promoted to the rank of inspector - Henrikson has held many roles in that time, many of which have assisted in promoting the role of women in the police force.
